WRITE from the Start!

For many of our youngest students, writing develops more easily and naturally than reading. In this activity-packed session, we’ll analyze actual student writing samples and discuss developmentally-appropriate teaching for students at all stages. We’ll look at the building independence through the writing workshop and how to effectively use modeled, shared and interactive writing.  You’ll get dozens of practical lessons that you will be able to take right to your classroom, such as Bubble Gum Writing, Strikethrough, Bossy Sentences, the OREO Organizer for persuasive writing and Bow-on-the-Present Endings.

GUIDING READERS: MAKING THE MOST OF THE 18-MINUTE SMALL GROUP READING LESSON

Guided reading is one of the most powerful tools we have for differentiating literacy instruction. In this session, Lori will share a lesson structure that involves focused multiple readings for comprehension strategies, word study and fluency practice. We’ll look at how the guided reading lesson differs for emergent, early, developing and fluent readers and you’ll pick up a collection of ideas for small group teaching and independent (“must-do”) activities, from sticky note toolkits to dollar-store manipulatives.

PUTTING THE “PLAY” BACK IN WORD PLAY

Take advantage of terrific tips and techniques for building vocabulary and supporting word study. Learn ways to make your morning meeting more productive with “A Week of Wonderful Word Warm-ups.” Reinforce word study in the context of shared and guided reading and writing workshop. Poems, picture books, puzzles and reading manipulatives from the dollar store are just a few of the tools we’ll share in this fun-filled, interactive session.

MANAGING SMALL GROUP READING INSTRUCTION

How do we put it all together – and still maintain our sanity?  Lori will pose some questions (and a few answers) to guide teachers in considering group numbers, composition and flexibility, organizing for independent learning (KISS!) and planning instruction.  We’ll look at a repeated two-day schedule and regular routines for maximizing student independence and making the most of precious teaching time.

What teachers are saying:

“I was recently a participant at the Summit 11 reading conference in Portland, OR.  I would like to start by saying that I was so inspired by your presentation.  Not only are you an amazing speaker, but the interventions you spoke about are applicable to real classroom settings!  I immediately bought all of your books after hearing you speak.  I have been pouring over them and they have reinvigorated my reading interventions.  I cannot sing your praises enough- thank you for the incredible experience! – Autumn Mansfield
