TRY THIS PRE-READING ACTIVITY FOR ANY GHOST STORY:
Help your students prepare for reading any ghost story with this before-reading activity from the GHOST HOUSE TEACHER’S GUIDE. With the students, brainstorm a list of things you would expect to find in a ghost story:
– an abandoned house
– a stormy night
– strange noises
– supernatural creatures
– a long-ago mystery
– something scary
– ghosts, goblins and ghouls
– frightened characters
Have the students check off each item they encounter as they read. This routine not only helps activate background knowledge to guide the reading, but also helps students develop a “stance” for reading this genre by preparing them for the story elements they will encounter.
