STICKY NOTE SUMMARIZING
Support students as they move from retelling to summarizing to main idea.
Give students increasingly smaller sticky notes to guide them in writing more and more concise summaries.
1. Provide students with a large (4″x 6″) sticky note and instruct them to retell the key events of the story in about 5 sentences.
2. Then provide a smaller (3″x 5″) sticky note and have them condense these details into a summary of about three sentences.
3. Finally, give each student a small (2″x 2″) sticky note on which to encapsulate the main idea of the story in one sentence (e.g., “This story is about a character named ______, who _______, but _______, so _______.”)
